Location and Setting of Villa Amygdalia

Villa Amygdalia is set in the hills overlooking Gavalahori with panoramic views of Souda Bay and the Apokoronou peninsula. The Villa has a private location set in a large plot with a backdrop of pine trees and almond bushes from which it gets the Greek name of amygdalia. It is close to the local regional centre of Vamos, a small traditional village with tavernas, small shops, the Agricultural Bank (with cash machine) local bakery and health centre. From the Villa there are scenic walks through the local unspoilt countryside. A rental car is essential given the secluded and private location. Within a few Kilometres are many other small Greek villages with excellent Tavernas. The Village of Gavalahori is particularly well known for its lace-making cooperative and has all the charm of a local Greek Village. A short drive will take you to the beaches at Kalives, Almirida or Plaka; all of these have sea-front Tavernas serving local fish and local Cretan specialties. There are large sandy beaches and water sports at Kalives and Almirida. Kalives also has a supermarket and a variety of shops where you will be able to stock up on local produce and wine.
Facilities at the Villa Amygdalia

The Villa Amygdalia is a large three bed roomed Villa completed in 2005, it is built to a very high standard with heavy insulation and the hillside setting remains cool even in the hottest periods. It has a 40 square metre pool with a shallow paddling area and ample terraces for sun-bathing. There is a large bathroom on the first floor and a shower room on the ground floor. The kitchen is fully equipped including a fridge and dishwasher. The dining and living areas open onto the patio which has tiled pergolas to give a shaded sitting or dining area. Air conditioning is installed in two of the three bedrooms and both ground and first floor have underfloor heating. There is also a private covered Veranda on the first floor that overlooks the White Mountains and provides an excellent area for dining in the evening as the sun sets over the mountains. A welcome pack will be provided, the Villa will be cleaned twice weekly with change of bed linen and the local British Villa Manager will be on hand to ensure that your holiday in the Villa meets your expectations.
Attractions and Places to Visit

If you wish to explore the wonders of Crete from the Villa then the city of Chania is a short drive along the National Highway. Chania is the original capital of Crete and dates back to the Byzantium period. It is a lively city but with no large tourist amenities. The old city on the harbour front is a maze of small streets with shops selling local Cretan products, the tavernas in the old city offer the highest quality Cretan food and wine, some are located in interesting old buildings for example, one notable taverna is a converted Roman bathhouse. A variety of local trips can be arranged including a visit to Samaria Gorge, horse riding and sea excursions. If you wish to explore Crete then a 90 minute drive will take you to Knossos the primary archaeological site of Minoan culture. Alternatively you can drive up into the Mountains which can have snow on their peaks well into June, the culture and tavernas are very traditional and contrast with the sea-side villages.
