The House and Mpumalanga Province |
| |
Killarney Farm House is an exclusive country home, set in a river valley of outstanding natural beauty on a working tropical fruit and nut farm, just outside the town of Nelspruit in Mpumalanga. The 7-bedroomed house is separate from the working farm and surrounded by 6 acres (2.4 hectares) of beautiful gardens and lawns with an inviting swimming pool, and sunbathing deck. The house has incredible views across the Schagen valley with fabulous bird life and nocturnal wildlife. Our guests have access to wonderful river walks and roaming rights over the whole farm of 1,240 acres (500 hectares). Killarney Farm House is ideally located for trips to the KRUGER NATIONAL PARK as well as Mozambique and Swaziland. We are the perfect holiday destination for people of all ages - whether you want a traditional family holiday or an action-packed adventure. The house managers live within the property grounds, and the house is cleaned and maintained on a daily basis. The province of Mpumalanga was once part of the larger Transvaal Province. Nelspruit is the provincial capital of the region and the gateway to the Bushveld - in particular the world-famous KRUGER NATIONAL PARK (Malelane gate is 100 km's away) which is one of the biggest and oldest 'Big Five' wildlife parks in the world. Mpumalanga is a lush, land-locked province, filled with deep ravines, verdant valleys, crystal-clear streams, magnificent waterfalls and plenty of wildlife. It is found north-east of Gauteng Province, and shares a long border with Mozambique. The province enjoys a subtropical climate and is very fertile. There are many huge plantations growing produce ranging from avocado pears to citrus as well as hundreds of thousands of hectares of timber plantations. We are situated approx. 32km from Nelspruit, down 7km of well-maintained dirt road (off the N4 motorway). The house is 370km due east of Johannesburg which takes about 3 ½ hours by car.

Domestic Staff |
| |
Our domestic staff are willing to work at the weekends and on public holidays upon prior arrangement. Esther (the maid) expects to help you with the following: In the morning, she will unload the dishwasher and hand wash anything left from the night before. She also make fantastic fruit salad upon request. Once everyone is up, she will make the beds, clean the bathrooms and sweep the house etc. At lunchtime, she will help you to prepare a buffet lunch by making salads and laying out cold meats, cheese, bread etc. She will also organise all of the cutlery, crockery, napkins and condiments etc. When you have finished lunch, she will load the dishwasher and run it. In the afternoon, she will do any ironing and lay the table for dinner. In the evening, please start the dishwasher after the final meal of the day. Esther doesn't do any washing other than towels, sheets and table linen which will be done weekly or as required. She will do the ironing and hang the washing if she has time. If you are a particularly large party, Esther may not be able to manage the ironing as well as all of her other duties. In this instance, you should speak to the managers about hiring additional staff at your own expense to do your washing and ironing. |
Weather and Malaria |
| |
There are mosquitoes around, but Nelspruit and the farm are considered to be a very low-risk malarial area. This means it is highly unlikely you will contract malaria when staying with us. Most local people don?t take malaria prophylactics unless they?re staying over-night in the Kruger Park or environs. That said, Killarney Farm House can't take responsibility for anyone who contracts malaria, so please consult your doctor or travel clinic prior to departure. November - March is mid-summer in South Africa. It is humid and balmy, and in the Lowveld it is ?rainy season?. You should expect rain in the form of short-lived African tropical storms. Daytime temps can reach 40 ° C (104 ° F) while night-time temps are a pleasant 22 ° C (72 ° F). In October & April there is typically less rain and only a slight reduction in temperature. In May - September it is typically dry. Mid-winter is June - July and maximum daytime temps are still around 20 ° C (68 ° F) although the nights can be cold.
