What you can do!!!
Origo Mare's position on the North Shore makes it a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, whether you want to swim, fish, snorkel, windsurf, bodyboard, kitesurf, surf, or splosh!!
Surfing
With good reason, the surfers 'bible', 'The Stormrider Guide to Europe', decribes The Canary Islands as 'The Hawaii of the Atlantic'. Open ocean swells from three directions unload on volcanic reef and points with power comparable to just about anywhere in the world. Add to this, year around warm, clean water, with just the need for a shortie and rashie most of the time and you start to understand why this is such a popular, year around destination. Situated on the North Shore, Origo Mare overlooks some of the best, if not the very best of these reef breaks. Known to the locals as Derecha (The Right), or in Britain as 'The Bubble', this is a consistent right of exceptional quality and can be seen working from the upstairs roof terrace! A short walk will bring you to this and several other exceptional reef breaks, Hierro, Izquierda, and Majanicho. Two exceptional beach breaks are a short drive away, and a day surfing Lobos, a short boat trip from Corralejo, is a must. This peeling, tubey right can offer rides of over 400m when conditions are right!
Diving, Snorkelling and Fishing
The warm, clear waters of The Atlantic are the perfect place to enjoy these sports. A Padi dive school operates out of Corralejo, as do many sea fishing boats. A popular choice with young and old is a 'snorkelling safari' to Lobos. Described as 'Wild, wet and windy, and operating from an inflatable craft, it is not to be missed. Julie and Becky spent a week over the New Year snorkelling in Majanicho harbour and can vouch for it's warm water and abundant fish life. Basic fishing and snorkelling gear are included in the rent of the villa.
Walking, biking and birdwatching.
Described as a haven for walkers and bird watchers alike, peace and tranquility is really just around the corner. Origo Mare lies some three miles from the start of 'The Volcano Walk' which begins in Lajares and finishes in Corralejo. Described in some of the guide books as the best walk on the Island, it follows a natural ridge with diversions up to look into the crater of an extinct volcano. For those interested in Birdwatching, Fuerteventura has a lot to offer as it's natural open spaces make it quite easy to observe species that are difficult to spot in other surroundings, including the other islands of the archipelago. Just some of the birds you can expect to see:- 1. The endemic Fuerteventurian Chat 2. Trumpeter Finches. 3. Black-bellied Sand Grouse. 4. Lesser Short-toed Larks. 5. Spectacled Warblers. 6. Cream-coloured Courser. 7. Houbara Bustard. 8. Marbled Teal. 9. Commen Ravens. 10. Commen Buzzards. 11. Egyptian Vultures. 12. Spanish Sparrows. 13. Barbary Partridge. 14. Blue Chaffinch. 15. Canary. 16. Bolle's Pigeon. 17. Laural Pigeon. 18. Berthalot's Pipit. 19. Silver Seagull. 20. Cory's Shearwater. 21. Berber Falcon. 22. Commen Tern.
Trip to Los Lobos. Part of the Natural Park of Las Dunas of Corralejo, Los Lobos is a great place for all the family to enjoy. The main beach is a crescent of white sand offering safe bathing and snorkelling whilst fishing off the rocks can be very productive. Lobos is also a haven for ramblers and birdwatchers. Well marked trails cross the island, including one to the summit of an extinct volcano. Lobos is famous for it's unique fauna, over 130 different types of plants. Herring Gulls and Cory's Shearwater nest on the high crags of La Caldera. As well as it's unique bird and plant life, Los Lobos also offers three species of reptile, two of which are endemic to the area, The Haria Lizard and the Lisa Majorera Chalcides Simoneyi
