Local Area |
| |
Salò is one of the eight villages of the Riviera dei Limoni, in the natural reserve on the Bresian shore of Lake Garda
Salò has always represented the gateway to the Riviera along the western bank, the most important town within the Park and the lively and sophisticated capital of what the Ventians called the "Magnifica Patria". Its predominant role in the economic and administrative life of the area is today reconfirmed.
"A delightful, unspoilt area on the western Riviera enjoying a particularly mild climate"
A settlement has existed on the site of Salò since Roman times and from subsequent developments there is still much to be seen. The 15th century cathedral is well worth a visit as is the Archaeological Museum and the Clock Tower Salò was a favourite in the elegant years of the latter part of the 19th century when the aristocracy discovered the spectacular beauty of the natural scenery of this area.
Salò is still without doubt one of the most beautiful resorts on the lake and today the wide lakeside promenade is the main attraction with a definite buzz around its many restaurants, pizzerias and shops. In this forgotten corner of Lake Garda the atmosphere is refreshingly uncommercialised with a delightful Italian flavour. There are designer boutiques, characteristic shops selling local delicacies and cafés in which to sit, enjoy a drink and soak up the ambience.
Visitors enjoy watching the many boats in the harbour, for the bay is well protected from the northern winds and thus a favourite with fishermen, yachtsmen and windsurfers. Salò's Saturday market is allegedly the best in the whole area and there are many musical events during the season with concerts ranging from jazz to classical.
