This holiday home is located in a typical Swiss village in Central Switzerland. It is away from the normal expensive, tourist areas and allows a visitor and family to enjoy an authentic Swiss experience at affordable rates.
While a car is not essential, I strongly recommend that you have one. The location in central Switzerland is ideal for exploring many places on day trips, while coming back to a comfortable and peaceful environment. The Autobahn is nearby, so you can do day trips to various places in Switzerland, as well as Italy, Austria, Germany and France. Make sure you have a good guidebook to Switzerland (e.g. Lonely Planet) |
1) The William Tell experience. Drive to Schwyz, visit the picturesque town center. Drive to Brunnen and walk along the waterfront with its views of the lake Vierwaldstaettersee. Drive to Morschach and walk on the cliff path above the Vierwaldstaettersee with stunning views of the lakes and mountains. Drive towards Altdorf, stopping along the way at TellsKapelle (walk down to the lake and see the memorial to William Tell). In Altdorf, view the statue of Tell with his son. From Altdorf, you can drive up to the Gotthard Pass on the motorway. Get off the motorway just before the tunnel and drive up to the top of the pass. There is a museum you can visit. From Gotthard, drive back down the mountain and take the motorway to Lucerne and spend the evening in Lucerne.
2) Interlaken. Start early in the morning and drive to Interlaken for the day. The Autobahn covers most of the distance. There is one stretch of driving over a mountain pass. Use the guidebook to plan your activities in Interlaken. 3 sights worth seeing are: views of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau from Grindelwald. The waterfalls at Lauterbrunnen. The caves at Beatenhohle.
3) Cycling for the family. Drive to Weggis and park the car in the village center. Cycle from Weggis to Brunnen (about 35 kilometers). This is a lovely, easy cycle ride which goes along the lake Vierwaldstaettersee, mostly following a cycle path (occasionally you need to ride along the road for a short distance). There are several villages along the way. There are many places to stop and go for a swim (the lake is cold, but clear and clean). Tip: take a packed picnic lunch and carry some meat for grilling. There are several spots to stop and have a grill lunch using communal grilling facilities. From Brunnen, check the timings of the ferries back to Weggis. While waiting, have an ice-cream at the cafe with views across the Vierwaldstaettersee. If Brunnen is too far for the family, the lake ferries stop at all of the villages along the lakeside, so you can end your journey at any of the villages.
4) Rigi Mountain. There are many routes to reach the top of Mount Rigi. One of the nicest is to take the cable car from Weggis. This does not go to the top but to a midway station. From there you can take the railway to the top. Alternatively, for the more active, you can walk up to the top from the midway station. From the top, there are magnificant views to the Alps and across the lakes.
5) There are many more day trips. If possible, I will try to be available to assist in recommending other trips. |
