Saillans is a village in the heart of the Drome valley. The Romans settled in this area of France and some of their buildings remain nearby. The village itself has a 12th century church and ancient narrow streets. It comes alive in the summer with a variety of concerts and festivals. There are four restaurants and two bars, as well as a variety of shops and a lively Sunday market.
To the north is the Vercors National Park, an area of outstanding beauty and a haven for a wealth of flora and fauna. To the south is the olive growing region of Northern Provence.
Activities Walking on the GR9 and GR95 as well as dozens of marked trails in the area, including several departing from the village (plenty of maps available in the house). Cycling, thousands of kms of established mountain bike trails and road cycling routes in the area (bike hire can be arranged locally). Canoeing/kayaking, there are two canoe companies based in the village (canyoning also possible). Climbing, there are numerous sites in the area. Parapenting Gliding, there is an established aerodrome 5kms away. Horseriding Tennis, the local tennis courts are a few minutes walk away. Other non sporting activities including visiting the local vineyards (Hermitage, Cotes du Rhone, St Joseph etc) markets, perched villages, potteries, caves, the Vercors National Park.
The area is renowned for its abundance of flora and fauna. Rare orchids and many wild flowers grow in the surrounding hills, mountains, forests and valleys. Golden eagles can be seen from the terrace. A whole host of other activities are detailed in the folders provided in the house.
