St Cere has a marvelous selection of shops and restaurants and is an ideal base for anyone looking for a walking, cycling or sightseeing holiday.
St Cere is a picturesque old town situated at the eastern end of the Dordogne Valley. It is situated on the River Bave, a tributary of the Dordogne, which it joins at Bretenoux 8kms north-east of St Cere. It is overlooked by the edieval "Tours de St Laurent" which is illuminated at night with magical effect.
About 20kms west of St Cere is the spectacular village of Rocamadour, situated on a steep rock face dominated by a 14 Century castle.
Other places of interest within easy reach are Sarlat (wold famous as the home of pate de fois gras). Souillac a busy town and old river crossing. The river is now used for swimming, fishing and canoeing (many for hire).
Very close by is the Gouffre de Padirac, a huge crater 90 metres wide and deep, caused by the collape of a cave, which is now descended by lift. Must be seen to be fully appreciated.
In the next valley is Autoire, a picturesque village which is officialy one of France's prettiest villages. Through the village the road goes through a steep gorge with more caves and spectacular scenery.
