Neumagen-Dhron

Germany's oldest wine town, Neumagen-Dhron, lies almost hidden in the tranquil vineyards of the Moselle Valley. Here wine has been produced in an unbroken tradition reaching back 2000 years to Roman times. It's no surprise then that the region produces some of the world's best white wines.
Travelling around

Neumagen-Dhron is just 35 kms from historical Trier, Germany's oldest city and onetime capital of Roman Gaul. It boasts some of the best preserved Roman remains north of the Alps and you should certainly take the time to visit the "Porta Nigra" (Black Gate), and what is now the Basilica but was once the Emperor's throne room.
The medieval town of Bernkastel-Kues is just a short car-ride away, or if you prefer the more leisurely approach the cruise going there starts just 100m away from your door. If you can imagine the Shambles in York, squeezed into a cleft on the side of a hill, then you come near to being able to picture Bernkastel-Kues but you'd still be missing the backdrop of towering vinyards crowned by the old ruined castle, Landshut.
The state of Luxembourg is only 30 minutes away and the capital, Luxembourg-Ville, is just another 20 minutes down the road.
In 45 minutes you can cross the border into France at Sierck-les-Bains or take a day trip to the old Lorraine city of Metz. A little further afield, Nancy is also well worth a visit where the "Place Stanislas" should not be missed.
Into Belgium in a little over an hour and you can visit the Ardennes towns of Malmedy and Verviers and explore the historical "Battle of the Bulge" locations.
